There are currently an estimated 1.5 million apps across the various operating systems, with over 2,000 new ones released every day. With mobile devices set to overtake PCs as the most common web access device worldwide this year, the impact of the humble app upon our lives cannot be underestimated. This impact also affects our work. For instance, flexible working is increasingly supported by new technology innovations, such as the business apps for smartphones which play a leading role within this scenario.
Just a decade ago, applications for phones like the ground breaking Nokia 3310 were functional and efficient, be it the trusty calculator or handy calendar apps, but there were no specialist business apps. As recently as 2007, there wasn’t even a job title for Mobile App Developer, yet Apple’s decision in 2008 to open the store to third party developers has led to a new app economy with nearly 500,000 people in the United States alone employed in the sector.
